The "Donate a Slate" Appeal is Extended to cover more work.In late September of 2005 the roof of the church was damaged by a storm. After an inspection by the architect and the roofing company who repaired the damaged roofs it was identified that the two valley roofs had reached the end of their lives. Repair was no longer the long term solution for them and after around one hundred years of service they needed replacement. Further inspection during the Quinquennial in 2007 revealed more problems. The North facing nave roof will also need replacing and major work is needed to the tower. The original "Donate a Slate" appeal has been extended to cover all of the necessary work, which is now estimated to cost in excess of £200,000. Unfortunately this means the planned internal redecoration will have to be further delayed and now hopefully will take place in 2009. St John's is a grade II listed building and application has been made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to help with these major repairs. The outcome of this application is pending. Even if we are successful St John's will still need to raise significant funds for this work. The "Donate a Slate" appeal, launched in December 2005 has raised over £7,000 so far and will continue to raise funds for the repair of the roof. If you would like to donate toward this appeal you can do so by visiting the Donation page. |
